HISTORY

UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Reis (also known as UFC on Fox 24) was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on April 15, 2017 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

The event was the first that the UFC has hosted in the state of Missouri and the Kansas City metropolitan area.

A UFC Flyweight Championship match between current champion Demetrious Johnson and Wilson Reis headlined this event. The pairing was originally booked for UFC 201, but Johnson pulled out due to an undisclosed injury and the bout was scrapped.

UFC officials were initially targeting a featherweight bout between former UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barão and Doo Ho Choi to serve as the event headliner. However, as the announcement of the pairing began to circulate, Choi declined the bout, and as a result, Barao is expected to be rescheduled against a different opponent, possibly at another event.

HISTORY

UFC on Fox: Shevchenko vs. Peña (also known as UFC on Fox 23) was a mixed martial arts event promoted by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on January 28, 2017 at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado.[2]

A potential UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship title eliminator between multiple-time muay thai world champion Valentina Shevchenko and The Ultimate Fighter: Team Rousey vs. Team Tate bantamweight winner Julianna Peña served as the event headliner.[3]

A bantamweight bout between Raphael Assunção and Aljamain Sterling was originally booked for UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs. Abdurakhimov. However, Sterling pulled out due to an undisclosed injury.[4] The fight was later rescheduled for this event.[5]

Yancy Medeiros was expected to face Li Jingliang at the event. However in early January, Medeiros pulled out for undisclosed reasons and was replaced by promotional newcomer Bobby Nash.[6]

A middleweight bout between former Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard and Brad Tavares was expected to take place at this event, but was scrapped on January 10 due to undisclosed reasons.[7]

A week before the event, promotional newcomer John Phillips pulled out of his light heavyweight bout against Marcos Rogério de Lima and was replaced by fellow newcomer Jeremy Kimball.[8]

At the weigh-ins, de Lima came in at 209.5 lbs, over the light heavyweight limit of 206 lbs. As a result, de Lima was fined 20% of his purse, which went to Kimball and the bout proceeded as scheduled at catchweight.[9]

HISTORY

UFC on Fox: Holm vs. Shevchenko (also known as UFC on Fox 20) was a mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship held on July 23, 2016 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois.[2]

The event was headlined by a women’s bantamweight bout between former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm and multiple-time Muay Thai world champion Valentina Shevchenko.[3]

A bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Championship challengers Anthony Johnson and Glover Teixeira was expected to serve as the co-main event. However, Johnson pulled out on June 18 to tend to personal issues.[4] In turn, promotion officials elected to pull Teixeira from the card and the pairing was left intact and rescheduled to take place four weeks later at UFC 202.[5][6][7]

Ryan LaFlare was expected to face Alexander Yakovlev at the event. However, LaFlare was removed from the fight in early June after sustaining an undisclosed injury and was replaced by The Ultimate Fighter: American Top Team vs. Blackzilians winner Kamaru Usman.[8]

Tony Martin was expected to face Michel Prazeres at the event. However, Martin pulled out on July 6 due to a neck injury and was replaced by promotional newcomer J.C. Cottrell.[9]

George Sullivan was expected to face Héctor Urbina, but was pulled from the event due to a “potential compliance issue” with the UFC’s anti-doping policy stemming from “voluntarily disclosed information” he provided to USADA. Urbina still weighed in as a potential backup opponent should there be a need for him to compete in another bout. Since that did not materialize, he will be re-booked for another card in the near future.[10]
